You're right, there's a lot of humor in the film, but noticed that it was confined to certain actors (Phoenix, Brolin, Short). Maya Rudolph is one of the most in-demand comedic actors and you could see her chomping at the bit but holding back. I wished PTA had unleashed her as well as Owen Wilson.

You mentioned the sexiness of the film. My feeling is that if you're going to show female flesh then show male flesh too. Tired and passe not to, and not reflective of the hippie era either, or even of this era. The older filmmakers like PTA are stuck in the past in that regard and catering to straight male viewers. What about the rest of us?

Totally fair, though women are hardly excited by bare flesh as men are, right? I guess it depends on the woman, these things escape me. I am just a dude!

That's an old wive's tale to evade the patriarchal morality police. You probably missed the explosion in the number of bare-chested men (and backsides) in film while inside, especially when women producers and directors are involved. If only more women were behind the camera...

Well, I did notice that. I reviewed Magic Mike XXL a while back here, and it certainly wasn't in a bubble. But, y'know, I didn't notice any Joe Manganellos in the cast of Inherent Vice!

I can't believe I watched Inherent Vice and didn't notice Joanna Newsome was in it.

I always learn new things here. Thank you once again for your excellent writing.

Yeah, I gotta say, that is exceptionally weird, how did you miss her voice?? She's delightful.

Someday I'll give this movie another watch but I hated it so much at NYFF I walked out before the press conference, which is semi-legendary cause Joaquin refused to talk or answer questions... typical Joaquin.
