I believe he, and hundreds more, were detained and eventually released. Seems the ICE people don't have the proper documentation to carry out these illegal raids, and they're being called out on it.
The head of ICE, Tom Homan, has been giving interviews where he's been whining that he's not catching as many immigrants as he had hoped because "they know the law", which is the sort of thing that, when it comes out of your mouth, you need to ask some serious questions about yourself.
I don’t disagree. And very true on Hoffman. I think for me it’s one of the rare times that Pitt has been 100% confident in leading/carrying a movie just being unconsciously a movie star instead of being most comfortable as an ensemble character actor. And in Moneyball he successfully movie stars the shit out of it and is absolutely compelling. You put say Ben Affleck in the same part and I forget it exists.
Would have loved to see the earlier Moneyball from Soderbergh, where apparently the MS Works paperclip was a major character and Demitri Martin played Jonah Hill’s role.
I have such a hard time about Moneyball. I love it, but so much of it is disingenuous. You had the league’s MVP at shortstop. You had aces on the pitching staff. You were all on steroids. Come on.
All these years later, sabermetrics were just a fancy way of valuating playing without paying them. And Philip Seymour Hoffman, my favorite actor, was GREAT as Art Howe. And he was NOTHING like Art Howe.
I have a couple more Sports Weeks planned (probably way down the line) and there's a movie about Dominoes. So I guess that answers that. It all depends. Are all sports just games?
Sugar is a wonderful movie from Fleck and Boden ("Half Nelson", "Captain Marvel") about a young Cuban pitching prospect who comes to America, struggles in the minors league system, and realizes he maybe doesn't love baseball all that much. A very honest, real movie about "the American dream."
Very true. I took a sociology of sports class in college and the text broke down the difference in sport vs game that I can’t fully remember it’s been so long. But I agree..if it’s more than one opposing sides competing to win then count it.
Damn, be safe man. Was he released??
I hadn’t heard this and I live in a smaller city so haven’t seen these things either. Great review as always.

We really live in the era of the supervillain.

Oof, Moneyball with Ben Affleck. Yikes.

I’m not even adding any of the 50 kids sports movies from the 90’s that shaped me. But if I was here are some honorable mentions..
Cool Runnings
The Sandlot
The Mighty Ducks
1.) Color of Money
2.) Rocky 4
3.) Warrior
4.) Moneyball
5.) Jerry McGuire

I’m a sucker for Father/Son movies so Warrior gets me every time.
I loathe MMA, but I was 100% in on Warrior from minute one. Great movie.
Yeah man. A relapsed Nick Nolte yelling quotes of Moby Dick while Hardy holds his dad. Gets me every time.
But I gage most of my relationships on how they feel about Rounders lol
Solid list sir. I’ve never seen Sugar.
Question before I do..would you consider Color of Money a sports movie?
I wanna count Rounders but I know it’s not although it does share the structure.

Well on a lighter note as your closing out sports week…what’s 5 of your favorite sports movies?
I may come back to revise this...
1. Breaking Away
2. Sugar
3. Rocky IV
4. Major League
5. Hm, how about Challengers?
Now you go.
GD, that’s depressing.
"Barbaric" doesn't approach it. You're in my thoughts, friend.
Thank you. You are in mine as well.
The “arm wrestling cannon?”
I do have arm wrestling cannons, thank you.
Thank you for sharing that personal anecdote. I can't imagine what it was like to go through and hope that I never have to find out.
I hope for solidarity, not solitude, for your future and mine.
Back at you, thanks!
Thank you for speaking up. Be safe and keep making wonderful reviews.
Thank you, I will!
