Deadwood is the best series ever conceived, written, acted, and delivered to the small screen imo.

I am a fan of several others but Deadwood continues to hold sway over them all.

Your every word down to the last one written I couldn’t agree with more.

Thank you for this substantial analytical read.

I wish that Powers Booth/Cy Tolliver could have been in the movie too. What a loss!

This is what you were referring to month or so ago! Great read.

The movie is a pale, clunky imitation of the series. But I'm glad it exists.

Thanks! I need to go back and rewatch this show, but man, I missed a lot of TV, I don't think I'll ever get around to that.

Deadwood is one of my favorite shows, but I thought it sharply declined in quality with the subsequent seasons. I didn't see the movie until a year or so ago and I was greatly disappointed. Still, I'm glad they tried to finish it rather than have the show end in the middle of the story arc.

Brilliant. Thank you so much for your incredible ongoing work.

The 12-1 ration should be renamed "The Big Bang Reality"

Thank you so much! Yes, let's make 12-to-1 a thing, that ratio and that idea speaks to me so deeply. It's been stuck in my head since I wrote this.

Great write up Dec! My favorite show tied with Twin Peaks and first 3 seasons of Arrested Development.

Brad Douriff is my favorite actor and this is his greatest role (even over that little guy) where he shines with a codger heart of gold. The way the show evolved from a grimey western crime series into a bonding of found families and shared community is always tragically touching. The preacher in season 1 always breaks my heart.

Was Douriff in the movie since Doc died on the show? It’s been awhile since I’ve seen it.

I'm a little confused, because I DEFINITELY remember Dourif with a substantial role in the movie, and I DON'T remember him dying on the show (which I last watched more than a decade ago). Dourif always deserved a better reputation than he had, such a dynamite character actor.

Say what you will about Graveyard Shift (I personally love it) but Douriff is fantastic just acting his ass off.

I got to meet him last year. He signed my copy of Wise Blood.

Okay NM. He survived the TB.

I was conflating him with the preacher. My bad.

And yes. Douriff should have at least two academy awards and had a career similar to Willem Dafoe. My other favorite character actor along with Harry Dean Stanton.

(Spoilers)

He passes a way by TB. I believe in the 2nd season.

But I looked it up and he is in the movie..somehow.

Yeah, I mean... everyone in Deadwood is slowly dying of something, but Dourif is up and moving a whole bunch in the movie.
