I thought I was going to take a few minutes to read this second bonus weekend post and then finally get around to listening to your stint as podcast guest, but no skimming through this quickly and moving on. A lot to reflect on, and some good new (to me) finds.

If you aren't already working on a semi-autobiographical screenplay, you should be (you probably have enough material for a franchise ;) ).

*The link in your post for The Act of Killing/The Look of Silence leads to your previous post on The End-I appreciated a chance to read it, but I'm assuming this isn't the intended target of that link.

Firstly, thank you for reading!

Secondly, That post on "The End" ends up discussing "The Act Of Killing" and "The Look Of Silence", so that was indeed what I was trying to do.

Third, a screenplay? I'm thinking hit streaming series. Six seasons and a movie, dammit!

Enjoy all the new movies!

Firstly,

I hope I didn’t offend you, and I should have known better than to think you had made a mistake before I finished reading the post on The End.

Second,

I suspect you are being sarcastic, but I seriously think it would be a hit. And you never know how many degrees of Kevin Bacon you may be away from someone who might actually get you a deal.

Unfortunately, you did offend me deeply, and I'm currently on the phone with the Substack Police. I'm afraid they're on their way to your place, consider it a kindness that I gave you a heads-up. You have the right to etc. etc.

As for a screenplay, I put my head down during some of the more interesting moments of my stay, I very intentionally tried to avoid anything becoming more dramatic than it should be. So I don't know. Maybe an original prison screenplay, though? When I was down, I wondered a great deal why no one has done a zombie movie in prison. The world doesn't need another zombie movie, but they're probably going to get one from someone -- might as well be me, right?

You actually think I would give my real contact information to Substack? I would apologize to whoever they ended up detaining and/or roughing up, but I’m sure that person has done something to deserve such treatment.

Re your screenwriting career,

I was thinking more about the arc of your story and general evils of the carceral state. The zombie angle would probably sell well.

Regardless, with your knowledge of movies, writing ability and wisdom of the world (I refuse to use the term lived experience), I think you would have at least one great screenplay in you if you were interested.

And I hope you are feeling better than you were when you wrote the review of The End.

The Act of Killing is one of the most unsettling documentaries ever made. It forces you to witness how people normalize and justify atrocities. It’s the kind of film that haunts you. Thanks for mentioning it.

Great post! You mention so many interesting films here. Jafar Panahi's recent work is particularly worth seeing as the films he's made since This is Not a Film all have been done in secret. They demonstrate that the creative spirit doesn't die even if one is wrongfully imprisoned. He's quite inspiring.
