I LOVE THIS MOVIE. And also thanks for pointing out something I never, ever thought of when it comes to motion and incarceration. It makes so much sense and yet, never occurred to me. Thanks for always educating us.
Man, I didn’t even think about Endgame (slaps forehead) and I thought Infinity War and Endgame were both pretty great. Maybe not Marvel’s best but definitely not Thor Darkworld either. No shame there and yeah you gotta love that Dr. Strange line…Dr. Strangelove?? But when Cap picks up Mnoljir and Thor cheers for him that he knew it it got me. I don’t think I got teary like that in a blockbuster movie since the T800 gave John Connor the thumbs up lowering itself down into the fire when I was 8 yrs old.
Agreed on Fury Road. Seeing that in theaters was probably the closest I’ll get to a religious experience. And Charlize Theron is so good that the next movie in a Mad Max series is not about the the actual Mad Max but a prequel about her! To steal a move away from Tom Hardy in one of his best performances is pretty boss level.
I don’t know if another movie has captured that since. Even a John Wick 4 with all its spectacle isn’t distilled down to that kind of simple, base instinct perfection.
Glad you got to see if in that time frame but disappointed it won’t be covered on your site for the last decade.
Hopefully it will get a 10 yr rerelease in 2026 and you can catch it on the big screen!
Yeah, I missed a lot of stuff on the big screen, and that kind of makes me sad.
I'll come out of the closet and admit that I am still, and always, a Marvel fan. I mean, I still have taste -- I thought Avengers Endgame was sloppy storytelling and lousy visuals. But the other day I looked up audience reaction videos taken at Endgame screenings, the explosive, surprised applause, and I was disappointed I didn't get to experience that.
I mean, yeah, I wish I could see something like "Moonlight" at the theater and not on BET in prison. But to see ALL the Avengers return from Magicdeath with Magicresurrection as everyone explodes in excitement -- I'll never experience such shared joy. I'm a little emotional about that.
That being said, there's that bit in "Infinity War" when Doctor Strange tells Thanos something like, "You made the mistake of coming face-to-face with the Sorceror Supreme" and I admit I would have stood up in the theater and been like, YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY! Probably best that I avoided that.
Train to Busan is a classic. And a complete tear jerker. Two scenes come to mind specifically. I’m a sucker for Daughter/Dad movies and my daughter was closer to the girl’s age in this when I first saw it. This is definitely one of those when hype met high expectations films like Fury Road or even The Dark Knight in its initial release.
Decarceration, do you drive yourself at all now and if so was that even more of an adjustment?
But yes, expectations met. I too felt that way with Fury Road when we watched a bootleg in prison. We got to the very end and it was like I was commenting on a world of which I wasn't a part, thinking, "They've done it. This is what they've all been trying to do all these years, and they did it."
I actually don't have my license renewed yet. Right now I've been taking public transportation. I'm a terrible driver, so I don't long for getting behind the wheel.
I hope I'm not overstepping here, but have you ever written about your prison experience (why you were in for, how long, how it changed/affected you, etc.) outside of movies? I really enjoy the concept of your Stack combining cinema and jail time, but I feel like there are essentials of your POV that I'd need to know to get the big picture. I'd be interested in reading an essay or something in length about it, for sure.
Well, I consulted with a few important people before I started this. And the issue is retaliation from law enforcement -- I remain on supervised release like all federal ex-cons freshly out of prison. As such, there is concern there would be retaliation for what I have said here if I give up key details beyond my "About" page. I welcome any questions, but will remain anonymous for that reason. I am curious as to what is necessary about "the big picture" and what this means, however.
Oh, somehow I totally overlooked your "About" page. My bad.
Say no more, I understand the issue.
I just meant that knowing a little more of what you went through would help understanding your point of view on a deeper level. But now that I read your "About" page, I have found the answers for most of my questions. Thanks for the honest reply.
I finally watched this movie this year and loved it. The sequel sucks but this movie is SO GOOD
Do you mean Peninsula? I liked it, but I should definitely rewatch. Or do you mean the animated Seoul Station?
Peninsula - i only made it 20 mins in

My favourite zombie film.

Also, have you watched The Wailing yet?
I haven't gotten to The Wailing yet.
